Kai Havertz to Chelsea? Frank Lampard should prioritise defensive signings first, says Owen Hargreaves

Kai Havertz is a "special" talent but may not be the right signing for Chelsea in terms of their progression, believes Owen Hargreaves.

The 20-year-old tops Frank Lampard's transfer wish list this summer and is understood to have told Bayer Leverkusen of his desire to complete a move to Stamford Bridge.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller has insisted Chelsea will receive no discount after the coronavirus shutdown, however, while the German club appear to have no intention of letting the youngster leave prior to the end of their Europa League campaign.

After completing the signings of both Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, Chelsea are hoping to secure a deal for Havertz worth around £70million.

However, with the Blues having been defeated by Arsenal in the FA Cup Final before a heavy Champions League aggregate loss at the hands of Bayern Munich, midfielder-turned-pundit Hargreaves believes Havertz may not be the answer to their problems.

"He’s a really good player," Hargreaves said on BT Sport. "He’s a great young player, but they have a lot of those great young players.

"I think they need some leaders in there. Havertz for £90million - you want ready-made, walks in and makes you a better team, and I think the worry is they spend right now £200m on Werner, Ziyech and Havertz and they can still finish fourth or fifth.

"They want to win a title and I think Havertz is a special player, but it feels like they need to sort out the 'keeper and the centre-backs first.

"Mason Mount could play in there. Where does Mason then play? He’s had a good season."

On top of the potential Havertz signing, Lampard is also keen to bring in defensive reinforcements this summer, as well as a new goalkeeper.

The 41-year-old insisted he learned a lot about his squad's requirements during the 4-1 last-16 second-leg defeat by Bayern and will now speak to director Marina Granovskaia and the Chelsea board regarding their recruitment plans.
