Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips will miss England's matches in the Uefa Nations League next month after picking up a shoulder injury during the defeat against Wolves on Monday night.

The 24-year-old suffered the complaint in the second half at Elland Road but was able to continue. His deflection from Raul Jimenez's shot caused the winner in the 1-0 loss.

Gareth Southgate handed Phillips his England debut in September and he played in all three matches in the international break this month.

But Southgate will be without him for the return matches against Belgium and Denmark in November.

"Whilst we are pleased to confirm that surgery is not required, the Leeds born England International could still face up to six weeks on the sidelines," Leeds said in a statement.

"Kalvin began his rehab at Thorp Arch this morning and will be working hard with the medical team to return to action as soon as possible."

Southgate was in the directors’ box watching Phillips against Wolves and will now look to solutions for his next squad, with Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson almost guaranteed places and Phil Foden a possibility to return after being omitted for disciplinary reasons for the latest matches.

Phillips recently spoke about Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard being his England heroes. At Leeds he has been converted into a deep-lying midfielder and compared to Andrea Pirlo, sitting in front of the back four and dictating the tempo of his team.

“I’m quite old school really,” he said. “I love a tackle. Love to get stuck in and love passing the ball and being on the ball.

“I was very surprised when the manager told me about switching positions because I was a box-to-box No 8 and had even been playing as a No 10 and scored a few goals.”
