Kate Beckinsale is speaking out about the health crisis that led to her extended stay in the hospital earlier this year, saying that grief burned "a hole" in her esophagus which made her "vomit copious amounts of blood."
The actress' emotional remarks came in the comments section of an Instagram video she posted on Monday, July 8.
It was a clip that had Beckinsale, 50, playfully clapping back at critics who say she doesn't act "age-appropriate," but it only sparked more criticism, including one person who suggested that the Underworld star was too thin and should "go do some squats."
"No, actually," Beckinsale responded to the commenter, before opening up about how the emotional toll of loss and family health struggles have impacted her weight in recent months.
"I watched my stepfather [director Roy Battersby] die quite shockingly, my mother has stage 4 cancer, and I lost a lot of weight from stress and grief, quite quickly," she said. "I was in the hospital for six weeks because the grief had burned a hole in my oesophagus [sic] which made me vomit copious amounts of blood."

Beckinsale first began posting photos and videos from her hospital stay on social media around March 11. At the time, she didn't provide any details about why she was hospitalized, but did share photos of visits from her dog, Myf, as well as balloons sent by friends and family.
She appeared to return home in early April, at which point she deleted all posts from her time in the health facility from her Instagram. Reps for the star never responded to PEOPLE's request about the reason for her hospital stay.
"I found eating very hard and I just worked very very hard on a movie that was actually quite triggering because it also involved the theme of the death of my father," Beckinsale continued in her Instagram comments on Monday. "So I’m not really concerned about what you think about my ass,”

"The birthday we didn’t know was your last,” Beckinsale wrote in the caption. “There will be no FaceTime today. In the middle of my night, watching you open your presents. No one received gifts with more joy.”
She continued, “I can’t take my Christmas trees down — they were the last Christmas trees I’ll decorate with you in the world. This birthday/not birthday, Christmas/not Christmas in April.”
