Kate Middleton is typically a pretty private person. Despite being in the public eye due to her senior role in the royal family, the mother-of-three keeps much of her family life under wraps from the rest of the world. Which is why it's such a big deal that the Duchess of Cambridge is set to open up about her experiences with motherhood in a new podcast.

In the episode of Happy Mum, Happy Baby, which is released this afternoon at 4pm, Kate speaks to show presenter Giovanna Fletcher in an unprecedentedly candid way. In the podcast, the pair speak about motherhood, Kate's own childhood and what she wants to pass on to her own children.

Explaining what she's learnt from her own childhood and from Early Years experts, Kate shares what she thinks is the most important when it comes to raising her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

"One [lesson] is quality of relationships. So those moments you spend with people that are around you," Kate explains. "I remember that from my own childhood. I had an amazing Granny who devoted a lot of time to us. Playing with us, doing arts and crafts, going into her greenhouse doing gardening stuff and cooking with us.

"I try to incorporate a lot of the experiences she gave us as at the time into the experiences that I give my children now."

Kate also explains to Giovanna her passion for ensuring sure her children get to spend quality time outside, with Kate saying that she always makes sure to spend quality time outside with the kids away from distractions.

Although we read about her in the news regularly, Kate Middleton has largely stayed away from the media in the almost-nine-years she's been a part of the royal family. It seems hard to believe, but the Duchess only carried out her first proper interview in October last year, when she spoke to CNN's Max Foster about the couple's official tour of Pakistan. Prior to that, Kate's only other interview was the one that followed her engagement to Prince William in 2010.

The podcast is a big step for the royal, but it doesn't necessarily mean Kate will be striding into the spotlight more often. The reason she did the interview was to promote her early years survey, '5 Big Questions on the Under Fives', which is intended to gather information and to spark a national conversation about early years experience that will help bring about positive, lasting change for generations to come. The project, which is part of the Duchess' Early Years initiative, is already the biggest survey of its kind in UK history according to Kensington Palace.

Giovanna Fletcher, who has been recording the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast for five seasons, joined Kate Middleton on her tour of the UK last month to promote the early years survey, so it's no surprise she was invited to interview Kate on the subject.
