Katy Perry Talks Struggles With Addiction, Suicidal Thoughts

Katy Perry sat down with Natalie Morales for Today and talked about the incredibly honest and emotional therapy session that she live-streamed on her YouTube channel Friday night. As part of a promotion for her new album, Witness, Perry is live-streaming her entire life for 96 straight hours. That included a therapy session with Dr. Siri Sat Nam Singh during which Perry opened up about her past suicidal thoughts and struggle with addiction.

Perry called the suicidal thoughts “Very low thoughts.” Of addiction, she said, “I have my own addictions that I struggle with. Whether that’s love, or substance, or things like that. It’s up and down.”

In the therapy session, Perry also talked about her new short haircut. Perry explained that she may have made the move because she doesn’t want to look like Katy Perry anymore, she just wants to look like herself, Katheryn Hudson. Perry spoke to Morales about letting go of the pop star persona.

“I think I was letting go of this thing that I created which is a more exaggerated version of me. For a long time I didn’t feel like old Katheryn Hudson from Santa Barbara was anything special. I didn’t feel like I was enough, so I had to create this character of myself,” Perry said.
