Kedah cabbies can help spread positive info about gov’t: MB

SUNGAI PETANI: Taxi drivers can play a role in promoting state government policies, activities and programmes while ferrying their customers, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah suggested today.
He said since taxi drivers meet with the masses on a daily basis during their course of work, they could help channel positive information about government programmes to the people.
“While ferrying passengers, taxi drivers (tend to) chat with their passengers, so they could use the (opportunity) to spread positive messages about the government,” he told reporters after having breakfast with taxi drivers in Sungai Petani town here this morning.
Ahmad Bashah said taxi drivers could function as the ears of the government by listening to feedback from their passengers on projects that have been carried out by the government.
He said the idea is in accordance with the ‘Muafakat Kedah’ concept which the state government is promoting.
On another note, Bashah said the state government will work with related agencies to provide better facilities for taxi drivers in Sungai Petani.
“We will discuss with the Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) to (create a convenient channel) for taxi drivers here to renew their driving licences in Sungai Petani, instead of going to Alor Star,” he said.
Ahmad Bashah added that the state will also ask Spad to carry out greater enforcement to curb illegal taxi services that could jeopardise the livelihood of taxi drivers in the area.
