ALOR STAR: A 12-year-old girl sustained 13 gunshot wounds when stray ball bearings from a neighbour’s gun struck her house in Langgar, yesterday evening.

At the time, the victim was having a meal with her family in their home in Kampung Lubuk Kenang, Lesong, which is surrounded by a paddy field.

The family heard a loud gunshot explosion before ball bearings penetrated their kitchen and hit the girl on her legs, right shoulder, right arm, head and chest in the 6.30pm incident.

Kota Setar distric police chief Commissioner Mohd Rozi Jidin said the victim’s father found bullet holes and gunpowder on the refrigerator, before noticing his wounded daughter.

“Shortly after, two men came to the victim’ house and profusely apologised for the stray bullets, which had been aimed at birds they were hunting,” Rozi said in a press release here, today.

He said police arrested the two men and seized a Topper 12 Bore shotgun involved in the incident.

"We released the 74-year-old owner of the shotgun after it was revealed that his son had used the weapon without his knowledge," Rozi added.

The girl is currently being treated at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
