ALOR STAR: Following the tragedy in Johor Bahru where eight teenage cyclists were killed when a car ploughed into them, the Kedah Government has recommended that local authorities include bicycle and pedestrian lanes for every new landscape project in the state.
State housing and local government, water supply and energy resources committee chairman Datuk Badrol Hisham Hashim said the lanes were necessary to avoid a recurrence of similar incidents.
“We sympathise with the families of the victims and are concerned that without the designated lanes, such incidents could occur here,” he said after opening a public participation session for the proposed landscape development of Alor Star City at the 2017 Townhall session here yesterday.
In April, added Badrol Hisham, a bicycle lane separated from the motor vehicle traffic would be incorporated in an Alor Star Municipal City Landscape project.
The 2.5 metre wide lane covering a 3.5km distance from Jalan Telok Wanjah to Jalan Stesen would be painted with special colours to distinguish it from the main road, he said.--BERNAMA
