From Pride & Prejudice to Colette, Kiera Knightley is known for her roles in some of the best and most beloved period dramas.

Now, her newest project has been revealed as a TV series adaptation of the novel The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry, originally published in 1893.

It tells the story of newly widowed Cora who relocates from Victorian London to Aldwinter in Essex, following an abusive marriage.

Cora, played by Knightley, becomes obsessed with a local mythical creature - the Essex Serpent. She later meets William Ransome, the local vicar; the pair find themselves drawn together then apart.

As well as taking on the lead role, Knightley will executively produce the series, which has been commissioned by Apple TV+, according to Deadline.

The Essex Serpent is yet to have a confirmed release date on Apple TV+.
