Khaw: Jubilee Bridge a tribute to LKY

A new pedestrian bridge at Marina Bay linking Merlion Park to the waterfront promenade in front of Esplanade Theatres by the Bay has opened to the public about a month ahead of schedule.

Writing on his blog, National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan said the Jubilee Bridge was opened early to accommodate the crowds who lined the Esplanade Bridge at Mr Lee Kuan Yew's state funeral procession on 29 March.

He revealed that it was Mr Lee who suggested the construction of a bridge during a 2004 visit to Marina Bay.

"He had observed that the walkway along Esplanade Bridge was too narrow, and he thought that a friendlier connection should be provided," said Mr Khaw.

The curved 220-metre long bridge forms part of the 3.5km waterfront promenade and offers panoramic views of Marina Bay.

The bridge will be officially launched in November to commemorate Singapore's 50th birthday.

"As we use this new pedestrian bridge to enjoy Marina Bay, let's reflect on the vision and the hard work of Mr Lee and our founding generation," the Minister shared.
