From Town & Country

Killing Eve's sophomore run ended on a major cliffhanger (consider this your spoiler warning!), but fortunately for fans of intelligence agent Eve Polastri and her obsession, the female assassin Villanelle, the show is set to return for a third (and a fourth!) season.

In fact, BBC America and AMC are bringing the show back early, a treat for those of us social distancing because of the novel coronavirus.

Here's everything else we know so far about what's next for Eve and Villanelle:

Season three will premiere in April.

Killing Eve will return to our screens on Sunday, April 12 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, airing on both BBC America and AMC.

Previously, the networks released a set of photos in which it's clear that–spoiler–Eve has survived being shot by Villanelle in the season two finale. It's also clear that Villanelle's wardrobe will continue to own our entire hearts.

Season three now has a trailer:

Kind of. It's more of a teaser, and a pretty vague, silent, atmospheric teaser at that, but if you've been craving more Eve and Villanelle, it should hit the spot:

The official summary of the season offers a clue about what fans can expect.

"The third season of the critically-acclaimed and award-winning Killing Eve continues the story of two women with brutal pasts, addicted to each other but now trying desperately to live their lives without their drug of choice," it reads, in part."All seems fine until a shocking and personal death sets them on a collision course yet again."

There will be a new showrunner for the third season.

Showrunners for the series are making a habit of sticking around for just one season. Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge served as head writer for season one before passing the baton to Emerald Fennell for season two, and now, Susanne Heathcote (Fear the Walking Dead) will head up season three.

"Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Emerald Fennell have delivered two addictively entertaining seasons," Sarah Barnett, the president of entertainment networks for AMC, said in a statement. "As we did last year, we’re renewing Killing Eve right out of the gate, now with Suzanne Heathcote as lead writer, as a sign of confidence–we adore this show as much as our fans do. Killing Eve doesn’t do anything in a templated way; we love giving opportunity to three genius women to make their mark."

Both Fennell and Waller-Bridge shared their excitement for Heathcote in a statement.

"It’s been such an exciting year for me on Killing Eve. I think it’s cool that this tradition has been built into this untraditional show. Inheriting some of Phoebe’s characters was a treat–I can’t wait to see what Suzanne does next,” Fennell said.

Waller-Bridge shared similar sentiments.

"I’m very excited that the Killing Eve baton is being passed onto another incredible writer for season 3. We can sleep soundly knowing these characters are safe in Suzanne Heathcote’s hilariously murderous hands," she said.

And some new faces in the cast.

Actors Harriet Walter (Succession, The Crown) and Danny Sapani (Star Wars, Penny Dreadful) are joining the cast, as are Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones), Pedja Bjelac (Harry Potter), Camille Cottin (Allied) Steve Pemberton (Inside No. 9), Raj Bajaj (Doctor Who), Turlough Convery (Ready Player One), and Evgenia Dodina (Invisible).

Waller-Bridge could appear on-screen in season three.

Speaking to The Mirror, she revealed that she'd love to be a character killed by Villanelle, and is considering writing herself into the next season.

"I was like, I am going to write myself a part so that I can be murdered by Jodie," she said.

The show is based on Luke Jennings's Codename Villanelle novellas.

But it isn't a strict adaptation.

"The book and the series are different but they do absolutely exist in the same imaginative universe," Jennings told T&C in a previous interview. "So Villanelle and Eve have many, many adventures and some of them are in the novels and some of them are on TV, and that’s sort of how I see it all."

If you'd like to read about some of those other adventures, his latest book, Villanelle: No Tomorrow, is available now.

How will the show resolve the season 2 cliffhanger?

At the end of the season two finale, it was unclear whether Eve was alive or dead, after being shot by Villanelle.

"Who knows what’s going to happen in the future—whether [Eve] is even alive or whether they could be together happily after," executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle told Deadline.

"What would that really look like if you ever have a happily ever after with a psychopathic assassin? So I think you’ve just got to keep that alive and keep that sense of mystery and surprise going. So I hope that what the fans ask: “what’s going to happen next to this relationship?"

The show has already been picked up for a fourth season.

In January of 2020, BBC America announced that the show will be getting a fourth season.

“How could we not have massive confidence in Killing Eve? It has won big in every major award show and is the highest growing show on U.S. television for six years,” Sarah Barnett, the president of AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios, said in a statement.

“The reason for this series’ emphatic embrace is the brilliant women who breathed it into being: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Emerald Fennell, Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, Fiona Shaw and it’s fairy godmother, executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle. Season 3 lead writer Suzanne Heathcote takes Eve, Villanelle and Carolyn to places more thrilling, twisted and surprising than ever. Our addicted fans will not be disappointed.”

It's unclear what the timeline for the show's fourth chapter will look like.
