KOTA KINABALU: Police nabbed a local man after he was found to be in possession of cannabis worth RM2,000 here, yesterday.

The 24-year-old was in his car when police made the arrest at 2.45pm, following a public tip-off that drug-taking activity was taking place at Damai, Luyang.

Acting district police chief Superintendent George Abdul Rakman said the suspect had with him a packet containing dried leaves, believed to be cannabis.

“Further interrogation led police to his home in Luyang, where we uncovered nine more packets of cannabis,” he said, adding that the man tested positive for the drug.

George added that the seized cannabis weighs 105.9 grams.

Police remanded the man for investigation under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug possession, which carries a jail term of between two and five years, and liable whipping.

The case is also being probed under Section 15 (1) (a) of the same act for drug abuse, an offence which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000, or a jail term of up to two years, or both, on conviction.
