Liverpool have been encouraged to replace Jurgen Klopp with a current Premier League manager instead of Thomas Tuchel or Mauricio Pochettino.

Klopp surely has a lot of credit in the bank at Liverpool as he has overseen a hugely successful era for the football club.

Since taking over in 2015, the former Borussia Dortmund head coach has helped Liverpool win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Under him, the Reds won the double last season and they also challenged Man City for the Premier League title before falling short on the final day.

But Liverpool are enduring a poor season this time around. They are down in ninth in the Premier League and they have exited the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

Last year, Klopp penned a long-term contract extension so his deal is now up in 2026. But the pressure will start to grow if their poor form continues.

While Liverpool have been struggling, Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton have been brilliant as they have surpassed expectations this term.

The Seagulls sit sixth in the Premier League and they knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup over the weekend.

Ex-Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has now told his former club that they should target De Zerbi when the time comes to replace Klopp.

“There’s not another Klopp,” Nicol told ESPN. “I tell you what you could do, because you are a big club, go and get De Zerbi from Brighton.

“On the face of it, you were like ‘wow, you are taking over from [Graham] Potter. How are you going to get more?’ Yes [I prefer De Zerbi to Tuchel or Mauricio Pochettino], because he plays exciting attacking football.

“I liked Brendan Rodgers, the way he coached the team. I just didn’t like the other stuff. But the way he played the game, I liked it. And I like the way De Zerbi has Brighton playing. The fact that he has got them better from when Potter was there is incredible.”

Klopp recently admitted himself that he has been taken aback by De Zerbi’s achievements since he replaced Graham Potter at Brighton earlier this campaign.

“Before they played Potter-ball, now they play De Zerbi-ball. We saw what he did at Anfield. It has worked out pretty well and it was a smart decision from Brighton to bring him in after Graham Potter left,” Klopp said earlier this month.

“The possession-based philosophy is very similar. Confidence changes everything in football and they are full of confidence. It’ll be tough but I’m really looking forward to it.

“I don’t think anybody underestimates them anymore. Who would’ve thought that their possession stats would increase after Potter? They’re playing good stuff, full of confidence and [with] no pressure, let me say, to qualify for Europe.”
