Re-electionist Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel is missing his old friends in politics.
The son of former Senator Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr. also admits missing Vice President Jejomar Binay, the current chairman of Partidong Demokratikong Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP).
Pimentel regrets cutting off communication with Binay, who assumed his presidential duty as PDP-Laban president when he quit United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) last year.
“Hindi kami nag-uusap. No communication at all… But all I can say is nami-miss ko na jokes ni Vice President Binay katulad ng ‘landscape’ (landslide) victory ni Erap in Manila,” Pimentel told reporters.
“Mga ganoong joke. Matagal na kasi kaming ‘di nag-usap at nag-exchange ng text. But after elections, dapat mag-usap na kami,” he noted.
In an interview, Pimentel revealed plans of getting in touch with the country’s second highest executive official to talk about how to set the direction for their political party.
Pimentel raised the need for him to consult Binay about his vision of transforming PDP-Laban into “a new generation party for young people” after May 13 polls.
“After election, mag-uusap kami ni Vice President Binay. Whether he likes it or not, we have to talk about the future of the PDP-laban. Are we together? Shall we now part ways?” Pimentel asked.
Pimentel served as president of Binay’s PDP-Laban, which coalesced with former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada’s Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) to form UNA last year.
But Pimentel abandoned his post to join Team PNoy’s slate after his rival, former Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, swore to become a member of PMP and a part of UNA.
Pimentel said he wanted to develop new leaders from Mindanao who will take the lead in strengthening the PDP-Laban.
“I have also plans for the party. I want to convert the party as a new generation party for young people or aspiring leaders from Mindanao,” Pimentel explained.
“Especially in Region VIII kasi walang senador (doon). So we should help develop young political leaders from different regions in the country,” he insisted.
Pimentel has a deep-seeded rift with Zubiri, whom he accused of cheating in Maguindanao that cost him to lose the 12 spot in the 2007 senatorial race.
His departure created rifts between him and Estrada but brought him closer to President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
