Kristen Stewart's new LGBTQ+ Christmas movie has become the latest film to skip a theatrical release in the US, Hulu has confirmed on Instagram.

Festive romantic-comedy Happiest Season, which features Charlie's Angels star Stewart and Terminator: Dark Fate's Mackenzie Davis as couple Abby and Harper, will now be released on streaming service Hulu in the US on November 25, due to the COVID-19 pandemic causing many of the country's cinemas to close.

The movie sees Abby and Harper preparing to attend Harper's family's big annual Christmas dinner. It will be the first time that Abby has met them and she plans to propose to her girlfriend during the occasion.

But when she realises that Harper has kept their relationship a secret from her family – and that Harper's family don't even know that she's gay – Abby begins to question the girlfriend that she thought she knew so well.

The rom-com, which also stars GLOW actress Alison Brie, Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza and Schitt's Creek's Dan Levy, is directed and co-written by Clea DuVall, who has acted in movies including Argo and Zodiac. The script is co-written by Harley Quinn star Mary Holland, who also has an acting role in the movie.

Director DuVall has revealed that she can't wait to see the movie hit Hulu, saying in a statement (via Variety): "I am beyond grateful to Hulu for providing an incredible home for Happiest Season, and I'll forever cherish my journey with Sony Pictures who felt just as strongly as I did about the value of bringing the first major LGBTQ+ holiday rom-com to audiences.

"I'm hopeful that this universal story, told through a unique lens, will join the long list of holiday classics that continue to bring all of us so much joy and happiness."

Details of an international streaming platform release have not yet been confirmed by distributor Sony Pictures but the movie is currently still set for a UK cinema release on November 27.

Star Stewart recently said that she has "wished to see a gay Christmas rom-com my whole life", while director DuVall added: "I'm a huge fan of Christmas movies, but I had never seen my story represented.

"Happiest Season felt like a great opportunity to tell a universal story from a new perspective."

Happiest Season will premiere as a Hulu Original on November 25 in the US and is set to air in UK cinemas on November 27.
