PADANG TERAP: The People's Housing Project (PPR) in Kuala Nerang here – comprising 286 terrace houses for youths with monthly incomes below RM3,000 – is expected to be ready by early next year.

The RM46 million project, being built on 10.12 hectares of land near Taman Belimbing, has reached 40 per cent completion, said Padang Terap Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

Mahdzir, who is also the Education Minister, said the development is one of three PPR projects in Kedah.

"This project is an initiative spearhead by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to build more (affordable houses) for low and middle-income groups.

"The other two PPR projects (in Kedah) are located in Kubang Pasu and Kota Setar," he said after visiting the project site today.

Mahdzir said the three-bedroom houses will be sold at between RM35,000 and RM45,000 each, compared to the market price of between RM150,000 and RM160,000 each.

"The government subsidised 75 per cent of the cost to build the houses,” he said, adding that those eligible may acquire the application forms at the Padang Terap District Office, or the Padang Terap Municipal Council.
