'Kung Fu Panda' director tapped for 'Darkest Minds' live-action film adaptation

Jennifer Yuh Nelson

"Kung Fu Panda" series filmmaker Jennifer Yuh Nelson is set to direct her first live-action feature, via 20th Century Fox's new, planned franchise "Darkest Minds," based on a trilogy of books by Alexandra Bracken of the same name.

The movie will mark Nelson's transition to live-action films, following her feature directorial debut with "Kung Fu Panda 2," which was nominated for an Oscar award, along with the followup "Kung Fu Panda 3."

Shawn Levy has been tapped to produce the "Darkest Minds" screen adaptation, which centers on a group who survive a pandemic which kills most of America's children and teenagers and are imprisoned after it is discovered that they have superpowers.

While this is Nelson's directorial debut on a live-action film, she has previously contributed to a live-action film project -- as a production illustrator and storyboard artist on Alex Proyas's 1998 film "Dark City" (via /Film).
