Kurdish Forces Battling Islamic State in Baghuz Light Fires to Celebrate Kurdish New Year

Kurdish forces battling Islamic State in Baghuz lit fires and fired guns to celebrate the upcoming Kurdish new year, Rojava Information Center said.

People across eastern and northern Syria prepared for Thursday’s celebrations of Newroz by lighting torches and candles, Kurdish media reported.

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces said on March 19 that they were in control of the Islamic State “encampment area” in Baghuz. The SDF said this was “significant progress” but not outright victory, as a group of IS fighters “confined into a tiny area” were continuing to resist. Credit: Rojava Information Center via Storyful
