The Olympian skates with Tippy Packard. (ITV)

Whyte, 22, sprained his knee when he fell and the show's medics have advised him to take the week off from performing.

The Olympic silver medallist, who skates with Tippy Packard on the show, said: "It’s an unfortunate accident. I’ve trained and worked hard with Tippy to perform this weekend.

"For me, as an athlete, I’m used to stuff like this happening where you get injured and can’t compete. I’m more sad for Tippy, she’s worked hard so not being able to skate is obviously upsetting.

"We both really wanted to do this number, it’s a cool performance and we put a lot of effort into it."

He added: "I was so happy and excited for everyone when they skated last weekend. I was watching and couldn’t wait to skate this Sunday. I’ll be there cheering everyone on!"

This weekend will see Rachel Stevens make her return to the contest after being unable to skate last weekend in her debut show because she had broken her wrist in training.

Bez will also make his return after isolating with COVID - he did not actually miss any performances as he had skated in the first group of celebrities to open the series in week one, but was not able to attend the studio last week to see the second half of the group take to the ice.

Last year's Dancing On Ice suffered the most contestant dropouts of any series, with five celebrities forced to leave the cast over injury and testing positive for COVID, and a number of the pro skaters also injured.

Dancing On Ice continues on Sunday at 6pm on ITV.
