Lakas-CMD may field Bong Revilla in 2016 presidential polls

(Updated 12:07 p.m., April 1, 2014) The Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) is considering fielding Senator Ramon Bong Revilla Jr. in the 2016 presidential elections, the lawmaker himself admitted Wednesday. In an interview with reporters on Wednesday, Revilla said that the option to field him in 2016 is being considered by the party, of which he is president. "Madami nang nagsabi [niyan sa akin] but siyempre hindi ganun kadali yun," he added. "Napag-uusapan pero siyempre too early para pag-usapan. Dito muna tayo sa trabaho natin sa Senado," he added. He explained that he can't say for certain whether he would accept the nomination, especially since he's not yet "ready." "At the right time. Hindi pa naman ako nakakapagdesisyon. Paghahandaan natin, pag-aaralan mabuti. Nakataya dito sambayanan so pag pumasok ako ibig sabihin handa ako," he said. "Kung saka-sakaling papasok ako paghahandaan ko yan. Pag pumasok ako ibig sabihin handa ako," he added. Revilla also said that they will decide next week if he will stay on as party president. The senator issued the statement after Sen. Franklin Drilon announced that Interior Sec. Mar Roxas will probably be the Liberal Party's bet for the 2016 presidential polls. 'Agimat' House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez, Lakas-CMD’s vice-chairman, also confirmed that the party is considering Revilla as its standard-bearer for the 2013 polls. "Let's not kid ourselves. He is a pillar in our political hierarchy and possible candidate for other positions. Tsaka may agimat iyon. Bihira ang senador na mayroong agimat," Suarez said at a separate press briefing, alluding to a role Revilla played in several movies. Suarez added that as a movie and television star, Revilla will not have difficulty drawing crowds if he decides to run for president three years from now. "Kapag nalamang andiyan iyong artista, ang mga tao, nagkakagulo to go the plaza. Hindi mo na kailangan hakutin at pakiusapan," the opposition leader said. "Tandaan ninyo, we have seen it once. We have seen it before and we’ve seen it happening again. Iba ang kandidato na galing sa masa at sa pelikulang Tagalog," he added. Suarez likewise said that Lakas-CMD is planning to elect Revilla as party chairman. The senator is currently the party’s president. The opposition leader further said that Lakas-CMD members already reached a consensus to elect Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez as their new president. ‘Important announcement’ Revilla's lawyer, Joel Bodegon, meanwhile said that his client will make an important announcement upon returning to the Philippines. "Siya [Revilla] ho ay babalik at magkakaroon nga ho siya ng mahalagang announcement o deklarasyon pagbalik niya at dapat abangan ng ating mga kababayan kung ano po 'yun," Bodegon said in an interview over radio dzMM. The lawyer told Senate reporters that Revilla's announcement will be "about the future of the country." He did not elaborate further. In January last year, Revilla said the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party was considering him as its standard-bearer in 2016. He is the current president of the party. — with Andreo Calonzo/BM/DVM, GMA News
