Jakarta-based language learning platform Squline today announced that it has received a ‘six-digit US Dollar’ pre-Series A by from Prasetia Dwidharma, an investment company owned by an angel investor Budi Setiadharma, the current Chairman of Astra International.

The funding will be used for product development, talent recruitment, and scaling the business geographically, not the company did not mention specifically to where. They are also aiming to foster more strategic partnership with their business networks.

Currently offering English and Mandarin classes, the Skype-based language learning programme will also offer Indonesian and Japanese classes later in 2016.

According to a report by Ambient Insight, Asia is the hottest e-learning market at 17 per cent annual growth with Indonesia predicted to become top five markets for education products by 2018.

Squline claimed to have been generating revenue since launching its beta version in 2013, with students from Thailand, US, China, and the Philippines. It partners with universities and colleges in Beijing and Manila for teacher’s recruitment and quality control.

Squline was founded by Tomy Yunus Tjen and Yohan Limerta. After taking part in a language course in Beijing, the founders realised that the best way to master a language is by constant and active interaction with native-speaking teachers.

However, noting that not every Indonesian students have the opportunities to study abroad, they decided to set up a monthly subscription-based platform that enable students to learn from certified teachers through live, one-on-one video calls and access to multimedia learning materials.

Squline is one of the Ciputra GEPI Incubator Alumni batch 2015.
