As the coronavirus pandemic continues to alter everyday life, members of the British royal family are adapting their work to adhere to government health and safety guidelines. Their latest development: the cancelation of large-scale events at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace for the remainder of 2020.

Per an update to the royal family's website, events with large crowds will not take place at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle for the rest of the year, but smaller engagements and investitures still remain a possibility for the Queen.

"In line with current government guidelines, and as a sensible precaution in the current circumstances, there will be no large scale events held at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle for the rest of the year," reads the update.

"A variety of possibilities were examined to see if it was possible for Investitures to safely take place in line with the guidelines. Sadly, due to the large numbers of guests and recipients attending, it was not possible to find a way of safely delivering these events in the current circumstances. Recipients will be contacted directly," the notice continues.

"The Queen’s intention remains to return to Windsor Castle in October and to resume the use of Buckingham Palace during an Autumn programme of Audiences and engagements, in line with all relevant guidance and advice."

While some smaller engagements may take place at Buckingham Palace in the months to come, the Queen is not expected to stay at her London residence this fall.

Last month, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson confirmed the British monarch's intention to return to Windsor Castle in October following a private visit to Sandringham. "Subject to the finalization of the autumn program, Her Majesty’s intention is to return to Windsor Castle in October and to resume the use of Buckingham Palace for selected audiences and engagements," the spokesperson said. "These plans will be kept under review and will of course be subject to all relevant guidance and advice."
