Last Tango in Halifax's season 5 return delighted fans who commended the bittersweet drama's brilliant acting and storylines after last night's episode (airing on 23 February).

The Bafta-winning BBC One series - written by Happy Valley's Sally Wainwright - follows the uplifting journey of Anne Reid's Celia and Derek Jacobi's Alan as they rekindle a passionate relationship after 60 years apart.

The couple married after reconnecting on social media back in season one, much to the initial dismay of their respective grown-up daughters, Nicola Walker's farmer Gillian, and Sarah Lancashire's headteacher Caroline.

Last night's episode featured tension between the couple after Alan applied for a job as a cashier in a supermarket much to Celia's horror. And fans couldn't get enough.

"How good was it good to see #LastTangoInHalifax back on our screens last night! Absolutely love that programme," one viewer tweeted.

Another added: "Fantastic to have #LastTangoinHalifax back on our screens! Superb cast with some great new additions. Love @LuCorfield especially! Instant & effortless chemistry with the brilliant #SarahLancashire - can't wait to see where their story is heading. Perfection."

Fans were also enjoying seeing Nicola Walker in muddy farmer attire as Gillian, which is a stark contrast from her fabulous power dressing as lawyer Hannah Stern in BBC One's legal drama The Split.

New cast member Lu Corfield debuted Ruth last night, with fans hoping for a romantic storyline between her character and Sarah Lancashire's Caroline.

Returning cast members included Ronni Ancona as Judith, Josh Bolt as Raff, Dean Smith as William, Louis Greatorex as Lawrence, Paul Copley as Harry, Katherine Rose Morley as Ellie, Felix Johnson as Angus, and Rachel Leskovac as PC Cheryl.

Last Tango in Halifax returns next Monday at 9pm on BBC One.
