Season one of The Last of Us will not be the last of the show—the HBO hit is officially returning for a second season. "After pulling off this unforgettable first season, I can't wait to watch this team outshine themselves again with season two," Francesca Orsi, HBO Executive Vice President, said in a statement. The Last of Us was renewed after just two episodes aired of season one, illustrating HBO's confidence in the show's success. What's The Last of Us about?

Based on the bestselling video game of the same name, The Last of Us follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor, who is hired to smuggle Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of a quarantine zone. It's set 20 years after the destruction of modern civilization, and the apocalyptic narrative has had millions of viewers tune in to season one.

"I’m humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey. The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast & crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations," executive producer Neil Druckmann said in a statement. "Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two!"

In addition to Pascal and Ramsey, season one also stars Gabriel Luna, Anna Torv, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Lamar Johnson, Keivonn Woodard, Graham Greene, and Elaine Miles.

"There is more The Last of Us to come," Mazin teased. "It’s quite possible that there will be a lot more infected later. And perhaps different kinds." In the video game, The Last of Us: Part II, new monsters are introduced.
