Lau Pa Sat to reopen Monday after renovation

The famous Lau Pa Sat Festival Market in Singapore’s Central Business District is set to reopen on Monday after being closed for an eight-month renovation.

This is the first time that the popular hawker centre has undergone a major makeover in over seventeen years.

According to a report by Channel NewsAsia, the number of food stalls has been reduced from 80 to 68 to create 460 additional seats for patrons and for some stall holders to have a larger business space.

To improve ventilation at the food centre, the management has placed eight 14-feet big fans along each food street.

Local celebrity Gurmit Singh and a magician known as Alex will be present at the reopening on Monday between 6:30pm and 10:30pm, it was announced on the venue’s website. Special discounts and promotions will also be offered just for the day.

The centre, which was constructed in the 19th century and was formerly called the Telok Ayer Market, underwent a series of delays during its renovation period reportedly due to inspectors having to check that the site keeps its cultural heritage.
