KUALA LUMPUR: The rise and fall of a country or a leadership depends on the wisdom of the leaders' advisors, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said, the role of an advisor is important as it could determine the success of a nation, adding that an advisor's failure to carry out his responsibility will lead to the fall of a government.
"The formation of a nation does not just depends on the kings and the political leaders but is also determined by the leaders' advisors.
"The fall of a leadership usually is a result of a 'penasihat' (advisor) who in the end became a 'punahsihat' (failed advisor).
"If the leader's personality is good but the advisors failed to carry out their duties and only care about their personal gains, then in the end, it will destroy the leader too," he said during the launch of a book titled, "Negara Maslahah Dalam Konteks Malaysia" by PWTC chairman Tan Sri Dr Alies Anor Abdul at Putra World Trade Centre here today.
The book, to be sold for RM80 each, discussed among others the role of prominent Islamic figure, Imam Al-Ghazali who was an advisor during the Abbasid Caliphate.
Also present were Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) vice chancellor Datuk Dr Wahid Omar as well as Umno's Sungai Besar Member of Parliament Tuan Budiman Mohd Zohdi.
Commenting further on the role of an advisor, Zahid said a good advisor will not limit himself to just an idea but will also be open to other perspectives and criticism.
"A good advisor must listen to advice and opinions from others. If you stick to your own old-fashioned opinions and just think about your ego, then wait and see...it (the nation) will fall." he added.
