MANILA, Philippines — Some of the House lawmakers still express support to the leadership of House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez amid criticisms regarding extra-marital affairs.
Surigao del Norte Representative Robert Ace Barbers, a known administration ally, believes House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez still has the support of the majority of members of the House of Representatives.
This is amid criticisms on the alleged extra marital affairs of Speaker Alvarez.
“Napakababaw na dahilan na maging kwestyonable yung leadership niya kung ang pinaguusapan ay yung personal na bagay (It’s a very shallow reason to question his leadership over something personal),” said Barbers.
Also, the lawmaker said, the trust and confidence of President Duterte in the current House Speaker remains strong.
Kabayan Partylist Representative Harry Roque, on the other hand, warns the judiciary to refrain from meddling with the possible disbarment case against the Speaker.
“If the court will not exercise judicial restraint on this matter, the speaker controls the super majority in the House. There’s a possibility of having an impeachment in the House,” he said.
Meanwhile, Gabriela group has no position yet on whether or not to lead the filing of ethics complaint against Speaker Alvarez.
“Gabriela is still studying positions on that matter,” said Gabriela Partylist Rep. Arlene Brosas.
For his part, House Speaker Alvarez is not worried about possible threats of his removal from the House leadership post. — Nel Maribojoc | UNTV News & Rescue
