Congrats, you’ve graduated from the beginner plant parent stage! You’ve got your potted plant and all of your gardening tools, but what about building your own DIY plant terrarium to help your plants thrive indoors?

Christopher Griffin joined In The Know for the third installment of Plant Week with their tips and tricks on how to set up an expansive terrarium in your home.

Open terrariums are really, really fun,” they said. “The reason I really like open terrariums is because you do not have to worry about that tragic condensation or any fungus build-up.”

With your open terrariums, you’re going to need some materials to create a foundational layer for your plants.

In addition to your tools and soil, you’ll need: activated charcoal, horticultural sand and reindeer moss.

“If you are looking for a project that won’t get your fingers too dirty, take the [reindeer moss] and pack it,” Griffin said.

Reindeer moss is very low maintenance, but Griffin still likes to spritz in some water after packing the terrarium.

With bigger terrariums, Griffin recommends adding in a handful of activated charcoal and then a layer of soil.

“Some folks like to leave the succulents inside of their nursery pot,” Griffin said, referring to the potted succulents they wanted to add to the terrarium. “But I am a fan of making sure our queens can grow and thrive and spread their roots.”

Griffin removed the previous soil from the succulents’ roots before planting it in new soil. Then, Griffin poured some sand around the edges of the terrarium and made a note to avoid letting the sand sit on the succulents.

And there you go! As Griffin put it, you’ve got your options for a “desert chic” and “mini lush forest” DIY plant terrarium.

These eco-friendly gifts are the perfect steps to a sustainable lifestyle:
