Tasmania-based furniture designer Duncan Meerding may be legally blind, but that’s not stopping him from spreading the light.

As Meerding only retains 5 per cent of his vision in his peripheries, the use of light in his work helps him communicate how he sees the world.

“Being legally blind, this vision of light emanating from the peripheries and the highly tactile nature of my work reflect the alternative sensory world within which I design,” he wrote on his website.

The cracked log lamps - his most popular pieces - are sourced from sustainable materials so he doesn’t destroy the environment he draws his inspiration from.

“My work should not merely be seen as something that looks nice, it should remind us of our intrinsic connection with nature and the effect that we have upon it.”
