Lionel Messi is out of contract in 2018 and there's still no confirmation he'll renew. Even though there's constant contact by phone between Barcelona and his advisers, the two parties are yet to sit down and discuss a new deal, Goal can reveal.
The player's father, Jorge Messi, is in Barcelona where he arrived last week to see to some personal matters. However, no talks have taken place and none are currently planned with Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu.
The club chief said recently that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner would spend the rest of his career at Camp Nou and he himself is keen to manage negotiations for the forward's next contract.
Sources close to the player claim there will be no problem in agreeing a new deal as both the player and the club want the same thing and Barca remain confident the 29-year-old will keep wearing the Blaugrana shirt for many years to come.
Jorge Messi is expected to return to Argentina shortly and even though there has been no meeting yet with club officials, he could still sit down with Bartomeu to start the renewal process before leaving the Catalan capital in the coming days.
Messi, meanwhile, was criticised along with his team-mates after Barca were thrashed 4-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The Argentine will be keen to know the club's plans for next season and beyond amid uncertainty over the future of coach Luis Enrique, who is out of contract in the summer and yet to reveal whether he will stay or go at the end of the current campaign.
Barca and Messi are back in action in the Primera Division at home to Leganes on Sunday.
