Following his turn as leading man Ross Poldark in BBC One's smash hit period drama Poldark, Aidan Turner has taken on an exciting new role.

He'll star in Leonardo (working title), a drama about well-known historical figure Leonardo da Vinci, who's widely praised for being a genius in various disciplines.

Here's what you need to know about the drama...

Leonardo: What's it about?

Co-writer Frank Spotnitz told Variety the show exists “not just [to] say that Leonardo was a genius, but really show why he was a genius and have the audience understand what it was that made him so brilliant and radical and centuries ahead of this time….To do that, you need to get really close to his work.”

A preview clip shows Turner as da Vinci, working on perhaps his most famous work - The Last Supper.

Leonardo: Who's in it?

As well as Turner, the show also stars Freddie Highmore as a police detective, Matilda De Angelis in the role of Caterina da Cremona and Bond actor Giancarlo Giannini as the real-life painter and sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio. Carlos Cuevas and James D’Arcy also star.

Leonardo? When's it on TV?

According to Variety, filming wrapped on the series' Italian shoot in August 2020, after the show became one of the first large-scale productions to resume production during the coronavirus crisis.

It's currently unclear when it'll be on screens and as of yet, there is no confirmed UK broadcaster. Watch this space for more news.
