Listen up, class: E-commerce platform Bukalapak offers scholarship for computer science students

Six students from five universities in Indonesia have been announced as the first batch recipients of the scholarship

Indonesian e-commerce platform Bukalapak today announced the first batch recipients of the company’s scholarship programme for computer science students, BukaBeasiswa.

The students’ name are Luqman Arifin Siswanto (Bandung Institute of Technology), Radivan Luberiski (Bogor Agricultural Institute), Fakhri Izzudin (Bogor Agricultural Institute), Muhammad Rifat (University of Indonesia), Budi Pangestu Tanujaya (Sepuluh November Institute of Technology), and Nikolaus Ferdy Tanujaya (Tarumanegara University).

The scholarship recipients will have one year of their tuition fee covered by Bukalapak. They will also receive IDR1,500,000 (US$113) worth of monthly stipend, training from industry practitioners, and an opportunity to work for the e-commerce company.

“This is the first year of the programme’s implementation, and we are immensely proud of what we are doing. Education is one of our responsibilities in empowering and encouraging a new generation of computer scientist for the future, by building the information technology industry and supporting their study,” said Bukalapak CEO and Founder Achmad Zaky in a press statement.

The scholarship programme claimed to have received up to 1,600 applicants from universities across Indonesia. The selection process includes administrative selection, as well as online and on-site programming tests.

“These six scholarship recipients are just the beginning. In the future we hope to be able to give more to Indonesia’s future computer scientists,” added Zaky .

Bukalapak claims this scholarship programme is the first of its kind offered by an e-commerce startup in Indonesia.

In June, Bukalapak was reported to have been preparing for an IPO, which Zaky later denied.

Recently he had also received a prestigious award from President Joko Widodo.
