Livelihood program

Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija - Impressed by the soldiers' livelihood program, President Aquino cited during his State-of-the-Nation Address the success of the "gulayan" program of the Philippine Army in Fort Magsaysay, home of the 7th Infantry (Kaugnay) Division (7ID).

President Aquino mentioned how the soldiers were able to make extra income for their livelihood by planting vegetables, among others.

It can be recalled that the 7th ID, then under the leadership of Maj. Gen. Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr., now the new commander of the Northern Luzon command, had initiated the project after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Department of National Defense (DND), Department of Agriculture (DA), and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) for the boosting of the Army's cooperative program here.

Catapang said the project was part of the livelihood program for the active and retired military personnel, to include civilian employees utilizing the vast land of Fort Magsaysay Military Reservation (FMMR).
