SINGAPORE — Fans of English giants Liverpool in Singapore could get to see their favourite football stars such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk in person in July.

Sports news website The Athletic reported on Monday (14 February) that the 2019/20 English Premier League (EPL) champions are in talks to play two lucrative pre-season friendlies against fellow EPL rivals in Southeast Asia: against Manchester United in Bangkok, and against Crystal Palace in Singapore.

Discussions are reportedly at an advanced stage for Jurgen Klopp's side to take on Man United on 12 July, and then face Palace three days later. Contracts have yet to be signed, but if details are successfully ironed out, an announcement could be made in early March.

The Athletic reported that Palace will fly to Australia to take on Man United after facing Liverpool. The Reds, on the other hand, are expected to return to Europe for a training camp in either France or Austria, as they prepare for the 2022/23 EPL season.

Liverpool have a huge following in Asia, but have not visited the continent since 2017, when they played Palace and Leicester City in Hong Kong as part of the Premier League Asia Trophy pre-season tournament.

In 2018 and 2019, the Merseyside club went to the United States for their pre-season games. However, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 had prevented EPL clubs to embark on overseas tours, and Liverpool have kept their pre-season programmes in Europe for the past two years.
