Liverpool trio not ‘good enough’, as ‘hopeless’ midfielder targeted in onslaught after Klopp questioned
Fabinho bore the brunt of an onslaught from a journalist as he also illustrated how Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain “aren’t good enough” for Liverpool.
The Reds are in one of the worst positions they’ve been in for some time. You have to go back to the 2015/16 season to find the last time they finished outside the top four.
Since then, they’ve won the league, finished second twice and won the Champions League.
This season, though, they’re staring down the barrel of their worst league finish in years. Jurgen Klopp’s side currently find themselves 10th in the Premier League, having lost seven out of their 20 games.
Brighton, Brentford and Fulham are all ahead of them. What’s more, Liverpool’s run in recent weeks has been shocking.
They’ve lost to two of those sides – Brighton and Brentford – as well as Wolves, and drawn to Chelsea all in their last four games.
It’s quite the fall from grace from where they have found themselves over the last few campaigns. Just last season, they ran Manchester City right to the wire, and the title still hung in the balance on the final game of the season.
Questions have been raised over some of the players, and for good reason, given their poor form.
‘Hopeless’ Fabinho targeted in onslaught
One of the areas that’s come into the question the most has been the midfield. That it’s an ageing area of the squad has been very clear this season.
What’s more, it seems some players just aren’t at the required level. Those are the thoughts of one journalist, who has questioned the level of three players in particular.
“This idea that they will be relying on Naby Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain. These players aren’t good enough for Liverpool,”he told Football Insider.
“Fabinho has fallen off a cliff in terms of his form. He was outstanding before but now he looks hopeless. He is a Titanic in the middle of the park, slow, cumbersome, getting in the way.
“I don’t know what’s happened to him.”
Indeed, not too long ago, Fabinho was one of Liverpool’s most trusted assets. But he’s not been at the same level this season, and was dropped for their last game against Wolves because of it.
Recruitment questioned as Liverpool barrel towards failure
The lack of recruitment in the January window has also been questioned. Indeed, with the Reds in such a tough spot, bringing in more than the one player in the winter would have been expected.
However, Klopp has maintained his pledge of loyalty to his players, and it’s not paying off.
That will likely see them in a tough spot come the end of the season, as per the journalist.
“Liverpool needed a midfielder,” he said.
“They are in a bad way if I am being honest with you. I don’t see them getting in the top four this year.”
Indeed, a finish anywhere near the top four seems a long shot at the moment.
