Local dairy industry gets a boost with upcoming dairy plant

ROMPIN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak paid a working visit to inspect a new dairy processing plant being constructed at the RM18.3 million Muadzam Shah Cattle Research and Innovation Centre(MSCRIC) here.

Taking time off from his busy schedule, Najib toured the site of the plant, which is expected to be completed by end of the year.

Once the new dairy processing plant is completed, MSCRIC is set to double milk production to 5.36 million litres of fresh milk or 9 per cent of the domestic milk production.

MSCRIC is part of the government’s efforts to boost the domestic dairy industry.

During the visit, Najib had also given appointment letters to six satellite farmers chosen by MSCRIC as the first batch of participants.

They will be given training and guidance to produce quality raw milk that meets international standards, which will increase production by 20 per cent.

Spearheaded by anchor company The Holstein Milk Company Sdn Bhd, MSCRIC has successfully transformed the local agribusiness industry here, producing 2.56 million litres of fresh milk.

Also present were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) director-general Datuk Dr Sharif Haron, and East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) chief executive officer Datuk Seri Jebasingam Issace John.
