LANGKAWI: The terror attack in London which left five people dead and scores others injured further proves the necessity of addressing the issue of terrorism, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said here today.

He said what happened at the Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament is something that cannot be taken lightly.

"What has happened in Europe could also occur in our region, and as I have reminded the public, Alhamdulillah, our country today is still peaceful, with our security agencies managing to control the situation.

"However, from the Ministry’s and Armed Forces' perspective, we are concerned that once the offensive operations (against the Islamic State) are successful, it is not impossible for their members to return to their home countries – Australia, the Philippines, Singapore, as well as Malaysia, among others.

"What I am worried about is also the influence of terrorism through social media that might inspire lone wolf attacks like what happened in Nice and London," Hishammuddin said during a press conference after an agreements-signing ceremony at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace exhibition 2017 (LIMA’17), here today.

He added that he was informed that IS has already claimed responsibility for the London attack.

Hishammuddin said he had contacted his counterpart in London to extend his condolences over the incident, and to state that Malaysia is in solidarity with them in facing the tragedy.
