Looking at a Volkswagen Lamando? What are your other options?

·3-min read

The Volkswagen Lamando is a compact sedan that's powered by a 1.4-liter turbo engine with 150hp and 250Nm, which is mated to a seven-speed DSG transmission.

The Lamando's highlight features include an Active Info Display, which shows crucial trip information in high-resolution and dynamic color, and a 9.2-inch infotainment audio system that's linked to eight-speakers.

Prices start at P1.569 million for the 280 TSI DSG SE, while the range-topping 280 TSI DSG SEL goes for P1.703 million.

You'll also be bucking the SUV trend with the Lamando. Forget the tall ride height and big diesel engine — you'll be spending more time in the city, anyway.

But this Volkswagen is not alone in the now-underrated sedan segment. Let's take a look at the VW's competitors, which all have their unique qualities.

Fuel-efficient: Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid (P1.548 million)

To save fuel and lower emissions, the Ioniq Hybrid is powered by a 1.6-liter CVVT engine that makes 150hp and a 42kW lithium-ion battery. Its fuel consumption is rated at 24kpl. The car's aerodynamic body helps it achieve that figure, too.

Tried-and-tested: Toyota Corolla Altis (P1.014 - P1.595 million)

Here's a car that doesn't need any introduction. The venerated Corolla Altis has been a reliable transport for generations, and this latest version is likely to continue that service.

There's the added bonus of a Corolla Altis Hybrid, too, which combines a 1.8-liter gas engine with a 1.3kWh battery to yield an output of 168hp.

Different and turbocharged: Kia Forte (P1.095 - P1.65 million)

While sedans are rare today, the Forte is even more of a unicorn. The Forte will stand out with its European-inspired styling, and that Tiger Nose grille.

The top-model Turbo GT AT packs a 1.6-liter turbo engine that delivers 201hp and 265Nm of torque, and is mated to a seven-speed dual clutch with manual mode.

Stylish and upscale: Mazda 3 Sedan (P1.295 - P1,495 million)

Aside from the minimalist styling, Mazda has fitted the 3 Sedan with creature comforts that belie its price tag.

The car features dynamic stability control, and the cabin can be accessed with keyless entry. Inside, the cabin has power-adjustable driver's seat, frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a 12-speaker Bose sound system.

Aside from those offerings from Japan and Korea, the Lamando has a fellow-Chinese rival in the MG 6. The Lamando is, by the way, a product of Volkswagen China that's "tailor made" for Asian consumers.

The MG 6 (P1.069 - P1.189 million) is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine that produces 167hp and 250Nm. A seven-speed twin-clutch transmission with manual function manages the engine's power.

This sedan's highlight features include a seven-inch virtual instrument cluster, and infotainment courtesy of an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay. A sunroof brings in light to the cabin.
