Loose Women's Ruth Langsford has broken down in tears over an emotional Coronation Street storyline.

In recent Corrie episodes, Evelyn Plummer's pet dog Cerberus died, after eating an Eccles cake that Roy Cropper accidentally dropped on the floor in the café.

After rushing Cerberus to the vets for tests, Evelyn was told that his kidneys had failed, and the soap aired an emotional goodbye between the pair at the vets as Evelyn's loyal sidekick was put down.

Discussing the storyline on today's (March 28) Loose Women, Ruth's eyes became teary as she talked about her beloved pet dog Maggie.

Speaking to her co-stars Coleen Nolan, Frankie Bridge, and Janet Street Porter about the episode, Ruth said it made her think about Maggie dying one day as a cute photo of Maggie appeared on the screen.

As Ruth dried the tears from her eyes with a tissue she said: "My little Maggie is probably about 13 and she's a bit grey now. Watching that is a bit like: 'Oh no, that is going to happen'."

Ruth, a self confessed "Corrie fan", said that Evelyn actress Maureen Lipman wrote in to Loose Women about filming the emotional scene.

According to Ruth, Lipman had recently put down her own pet dog and the tragic scene "brought it all back".

When Lipman was asked by the makeup team at Corrie if she would need a "tear stick" to help her cry during the scene, the actress turned it down saying she wouldn't need it due to her own recent loss.

"Sadly she had to have her own dog put down, so she said it brought it all back of having to make that awful decision," Ruth explained.

Loose Women airs on weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
