Lottery win for machinist who scoops £1 million the day after being made redundant
A machinist who has suffered a series of devastating recent setbacks was able to finally celebrate after winning a £1m lottery jackpot the day after he was made redundant.
David Adams was let go from his job as a wood machinist last Friday, marking another blow in a year during which he has lost his sister in-law to a heart attack, and his brother to Covid-19.
But Mr Adam's fortunes turned around when he checked the lottery numbers in the early hours of Sunday morning, before waking up his wife Shelley, 52, to share the good news.
The 61-year-old, from Chipping Norton, Oxon, said: “Many people would think the redundancy was the worst news but in fact it is just the final straw in a catalogue of difficulties we have experienced.”
“It has been a really tough time but we stick together and try to keep smiling, whatever life has thrown at us. Never in our wildest dreams did we think the next thing thrown our way would be £1m quid!”
The couple, who have so far been modest in their celebrations, said they may take a holiday when the coronavirus rules allow for one.
Mr Adams, who wants to upgrade his Ford Mondeo to a Nissan Qashqai with some of the winnings, added: “We've always worked hard and know the value of money but this is a number far beyond anything we could ever comprehend.”
