Louis Vuitton mulls first China duty free store

Luxury shopping at Louis Vuitton could be about to go duty free for the first time in China.

That's according to two sources close to the matter.

It would be a major move by the French fashion giant.

The company has only a small number of duty free stores around the world.

Louis Vuitton also famously never offers discounts on its bags and keeps a firm hold on distribution.

The duty-free shop would be set up on the emerging luxury hub of Hainan island.

The island has boomed as a high-end shopping destination during the global health crisis as Chinese shoppers have been unable to travel abroad.

The plan was unveiled by brand executives at a meeting in September, according to a source.

Any duty-free store would help LVMH exploit massive demand for luxury goods in China.

The firm declined to comment on the report.
