LSU receiver Kayshon Boutte out for the season

The hits keep coming for LSU.

On the heels of back-to-back losses, Tigers coach Ed Orgeron confirmed with reporters that wide receiver Kayshon Boutte suffered a season-ending injury against Kentucky over the weekend.

Boutte, a sophomore, has emerged as one of the top receivers in the country. He went down when making a highlight reel catch during the second half of the 42-21 loss to Kentucky on Saturday. That catch was his 38th of the year to go with 509 yards and nine touchdowns. In 2020, Boutte caught 45 passes for 735 yards and five scores.

Boutte is just the latest significant injury for an LSU season that seems to be quickly disintegrating as the questions surrounding Orgeron’s job status continue. In addition to Boutte, Orgeron also said Monday that defensive end Ali Gaye, defensive back Major Burns and defensive tackle Joseph Evans will be sidelined when the Tigers host Florida on Saturday.

It has been an injury-plagued and disappointing first half of the season for LSU, now 3-3 on the year. Two seasons removed from a national championship, LSU is potentially staring back-to-back .500 (or worse) seasons in the face. Last year, the Tigers went 5-5.

The rest of the 2021 schedule is brutal. Of the six games remaining on the schedule, five are against teams currently ranked in the AP Top 25 — No. 20 Florida, No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 5 Alabama, No. 17 Arkansas and No. 21 Texas A&M. The only respite is a visit from UL Monroe on Nov. 20.
