LTA to improve 17 MRT stations in 2016

The Land Transport Authority will be upgrading 17 MRT stations along the North-South and East-West Lines from the middle of next year to create additional space for commuters.

The project will involve covering the platform voids at 11 stations to create more standing space. The stations are Ang Mo Kio, Boon Lay, Choa Chu Kang, Clementi, Eunos, Khatib, Lakeside, Pasir Ris, Pioneer, Tampines, and Yishun.

In the six other stations - Bishan, Buona Vista, City Hall, Jurong East, Raffles Place, and Tanjong Pagar - more space will be freed up by repositioning the seats at the platforms.

There will also be more seats provided for commuters while they wait for trains, although the exact number of seats to be added will vary depending on the design of each station.

LTA chief executive Chew Men Leong said, “We are constantly looking at ways to upgrade existing stations even as we continue to build new MRT lines.”

Train services will operate as usual during the renovations, which will commence in mid 2016 and are expected to end by mid 2018.
