Lunar robots put to the test on Sicily's volcano
STORY: It may look like these
robots are on the moon
But they're actually being tested
on Europe's most active volcano
Location: Mount Etna, Italy
GERMAN AEROSPACE CENTER'S SYSTEM DEVELOPER, BERNHARD VODERMAYER, SAYING:
"We are on Mount Etna because Mount Etna is a site that is comparable to the moon or to Mars' structure. In this case, it is mainly comparable to the moon and we are used to the site because during former projects we have been using the infrastructure on the same site for former projects."
The robots go through simulations
of situations astronauts will
encounter in future missions
They're remote controlled by
the German Aerospace Center
at an altitude of 8,530 feet
