Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa has hit the casting stage and director George Miller reportedly recently auditioned Anya Taylor-Joy for a role.

Variety reported earlier this week that the 23-year-old actress had met with Miller over Skype (due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic), as he hopes to kick off production on the movie sometime next year.

Is the Australian filmmaker eyeing her up for the title character, previously played by Oscar-winner Charlize Theron, or something completely different?

Anya is carving out quite a career for herself, having already worked with directors M Night Shyamalan (Split and Glass), Robert Eggers (The Witch and upcoming movie The Northman) and Edgar Wright (this year's Last Night in Soho).

She's also part of the cast for X-Men horror spin-off The New Mutants, which almost seems cursed to never be released.

In that, she portrays Russian superhero Illyana Rasputin (aka Magik).

The Fury Road prequel centred on Theron's Imperator Furiosa has been in development for three years now.

Back in 2017, the actress explained to Variety: "I'd love to [do it]. There were three scripts. They were written as back stories to Max's character and to Furiosa's character.

"But at the end of the day, this thing lives and breathes with George. I think Warner Bros knows that. We are all waiting for him to show us the way."
