He will go on to join consumer intelligence company Dattel

Ashran Ghazi, Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Center (MaGIC)’s current CEO, has announced he will step down from the company, effective December 12.

According to a report by The Star Online, Ghazi will join Malaysia-based consumer intelligence firm Dattel as CEO.

Ghazi joined MaGIC in 2016. Prior to that, he launched ComicXcel, an accelerator for companies trying to start up in the comic sector and is the man behind the Rice Bowl Start-Up Awards. He also founded Joota, a social content networking website, in 2011.

MaGIC has not announced a replacement for Ghazi but Amiruddin Abdul Shukor, the organisation’s executive director of finance & corporate services, will man the post as interim CEO.

Ghazi said that he had waited to tender his resignation only when MaGIC was “safe in the hands of another ministry”. The organisation, which was previously under the Ministry of Finance, has now been moved to the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development.

MaGIC will receive about the same amount of funding from the new ministry, which is about RM50 million (US$11.2 million) yearly. To date, the organisation has received about RM 197 million (US$47 million).

MaGIC was launched with much fanfare on April 2014 by US President Barack Obama and then-Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. The organisation was previously helmed by Founding CEO Cheryl Yeoh.

Today, Yeoh serves as an advisor at various tech firms including blockchain network Tendermint and coding school Kenzie Academy.
