Majherhat bridge collapses in Kolkata, many feared trapped

Kolkata: A portion of a major flyover in Kolkata’s busy Majerhat area collapsed on Tuesday afternoon, leaving at least 5 dead and several trapped in the debris. Many cars were also seen caught under the collapsed section of the bridge.

Eleven injured have been rushed to the nearby SSKM Medical College and Hospital.

The flyover connects New Alipore to Behala and is located in a crowded area, with multiple residences, shops and schools in the vicinity.

The bridge collapsed during peak hours of traffic and it is being feared that many people and vehicles might be trapped under the debris.

Several cars, motorbikes and a mini bus can be seen lying on top of the collapsed bridge.

Movement on the Budge Budge-Sealdah railway line has been stopped for the time being.

In 2016, 26 people were killed when Vivekananda Road flyover collapsed in Kolkata.

The IIT-Kharagpur report had stated that the design of the flyover was faulty and there was lack of use of proper construction material, faulty design approval and wrongful project execution by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA).

The flyover had collapsed on March 31 last killing 26 people and senior officials of a Hyderabad-based construction firm along with officials of the KMDA were arrested in this connection. (News 18)
