Wantaway striker Cristiano Ronaldo was left ‘upset’ after the Man Utd squad took a huge pay cut this summer, according to reports.

Widespread reports have indicated that the Portugal international has asked to leave the Red Devils this summer if they receive a suitable offer for his services.

There have been rumours for the past few months over whether Ronaldo would or wouldn’t leave with Man Utd missing out on Champions League qualification.

Will Erik ten Hag ‘show some cojones and biff off’ Ronaldo after Manchester United slip into mid-table?

Ronaldo is now effectively on ‘indefinite leave’, according to reports, with the Man Utd striker missing the first two days of training this week due to ‘family reasons’.

The Manchester Evening News claims there are three main issues driving Ronaldo away from Man Utd this summer with the report insisting that Ronaldo has ‘grown impatient with their response to a disastrous season’.

Tyrell Malacia is the only signing through the door so far under Erik ten Hag despite the many rumours about who they will buy this summer.

The MEN adds:

‘United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League has also triggered a 25% reduction on players’ salaries, which sources close to Ronaldo say has “upset” the player.

‘Ronaldo agreed a £480,000-a-week contract when he rejoined United and his basic weekly wage for the forthcoming season is now £360,000.’

It is still unclear whether Ronaldo will definitely leave Old Trafford with no signs of concrete interest from any club despite links to Chelsea, Barcelona and Napoli.

But former Premier League striker Noel Whelan thinks Man Utd should sell the 37-year-old as soon as possible.

“This is obviously a big situation for Man United,” Whelan told Football Insider. “You’re dealing with one of the best players in the world here. His name speaks for itself, doesn’t it?

“I think the longer it goes on, the more speculation you get and the more negativity you see.

“Man United have got to nip this in the bud now. They’ve got to start looking now for the next Cristiano Ronaldo. Someone who can come in and fill that void.

“If they let him go as soon as possible there is plenty of time to find that player. It needs to be sorted out very quickly. Man United have got a pre-season to focus on. They need to change the culture at the football club.”
