Malabon City Mayor Canuto "Tito" Oreta passed away Monday morning due to "multiple organ failure," reports said.

Oreta was declared dead at the St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City at around 10 a.m., the Malabon City Public Information Office said in a phone interview.

The Malabon City Mayor's Office also confirmed Oreta's death, adding that acting Mayor Antolin Oreta III has rushed to the hospital upon hearing news of his uncle's demise.

The two offices declined to give details on the late mayor's passing, however, noting that an official statement will be released within the day.

Oreta in January filed for an indefinite leave, citing "health reasons." Reports have earlier noted that Oreta has been battling lung cancer since 2007.

Vice Mayor Antolin Oreta III took over as acting mayor, while Diosdado Cunanan, the highest-ranking official of the Malabon City Council, assumed the position of acting vice mayor in March.
