MALACCA: A total of 24 sex crime cases against children were referred to the Malacca Social Welfare Department in the first quarter of this year, Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said yesterday.
The Chief Minister said the development of social media and mobile applications such as WeChat and Facebook has contributed to sex crimes against children, as the perpetrators use them to lure their victims.
"The tendency of today's parents to upload pictures of their children on social media could also attract paedophiles, who are no different than animals," said Idris, who urged parents to learn from reported cases so as to prevent their children from becoming victims.
Nevertheless, he stressed that the state government, via its relevant agencies, will continue efforts to ensure the safety of children in Malacca.
"The safety of children does not depend on government agencies alone, however. (The public) should also play their part in safeguarding and protecting children," Idris said when officiating the state-level Stop Sexual Crimes Against Children seminar at Dewan Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh here. -- Bernama
